IPL is generally safe for most skin types but it may not be suitable for everyone. Lumecca IPL is not recommended for people with very dark skin tones. It may also make melasma worse (1/3 of people with malasma have improvement, 1/3 have no change, and for 1/3 of people melasma can worsen), Lumecca is not for people with certain medical conditions such as skin cancer or a history of skin cancer or for people who take medications that cause light sensitivity.
Lumecca IPL is FDA cleared for use all over the body. It is generally safe for most people and long term effects have not been identified. People who have had recent sun exposure should avoid IPL for at least 3 weeks. It is important to have the procedure performed by a trained professional.
The duration of the treatment depends on the area being treated. Small areas like the under arms only take a few minutes. Larger areas like the legs can take 1 hour.
Lumecca has minimal to no downtime. Some people may experience temporary redness, swelling, stinging or warmth after the treatment. These affects usually go away within a few hours to a day. You should avoid any sun exposure to the treated area for 3 weeks. Pigmented spots may darken for 24-48 hours after treatment, then flake off within a week. Vascular lesions may change color before they disappear.
